The base Explorer features a power liftgate, and a hands-free liftgate is available on the Limited and up. The base Highlander has a manual liftgate. Ford has redesigned the Explorer as a rear-wheel-drive SUV, which is like the early Explorer models, but retained the unibody construction, which is one of the best aspects of the newer Explorer models. All-wheel drive is an option for those who prefer it. Ford offers a number of powertrains, all of which feature a 10-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The Limited Hybrid features a 3.3-liter V6 mated to a hybrid system, and these combine for 318 hp. The ST boasts a 3.0-liter turbo V6 that makes 400 hp and 415 lb.-ft., and the Platinum comes with a lower-output version of that engine that makes 365 hp and 380 lb.-ft. The 2020 Toyota Highlander has but a single powertrain: an eight-speed automatic transmission with a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 295 hp and 263 lb.-ft. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional at all trim levels.
